Trial
- A blind study will be performed to test the effectiveness of the Salmonella choleraesuis vaccine intranasally in 2-4 day old dairy calves. Mustard seed oil used to treat calves with signs of Salmonella??"
- Calves will be challenge on day 7 of the trial.
- Calves will be monitored 7-14 days post challenge. Length of time will be determined based on morbidity and mortality of the calves.
Arrival Procedures
- Each calf will have their blood pulled and total protein tested.
- Each calf will be weighed.
- Calves will be placed in trial groups based on weight and total protein randomly.
Monitoring
- Calves should be monitored daily while feeding for being off feed, lethargic, or other signs of disease.
- All calves’ temperature should be recorded daily.
- A checklist will be provided for monitoring for clinical signs of disease, when to call a veterinarian and treatment protocols.
- All dead calves will posted and submitted for diagnostics.
Feeding
- Milk replacer twice daily. Times can be negotiable, but must be consistent once the trial has started. I recommend either 6:00 am and 4:00 pm or 7:00 am and 5:00 pm.
- Starter feed: Start feeding on day 3. They will need a small amount to cover the bottom of a bucket.
- Water: Offered after each feeding. Milk should be rinsed out of buckets, then fresh water given.
- A checklist of feeding procedures will be provided.
