Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that can be caused by a variety of pathogens, both bacterial and viral. Clinical signs of pneumonia include decreased appetite, coughing, thumping, fever and nasal discharge.
There are several factors that can contribute to pneumonia. Added stresses from the environment, such as temperature fluctuations, dusty conditions, overcrowding and manure buildup can all contribute to the development of pneumonia.
It is also important for lambs to build their immune system. Quality nutrition is essential for a lamb to develop their immune system. Adequate levels of vitamin E and Selenium are important in developing immune function. Keeping lambs at an adequate body condition and on a balanced ration also assist in keeping their immune systems strong.
Early treatment is essential to decrease long term problems in the lambs. When treating the group, use a water medication with Tetracycline or Sulfa, plus aspirin. If there are individual animals with signs of pneumonia consider treating with Nuflor or Bovimycin. If the lambs have temperatures, Banamine should also be included in the treatment protocol.
