Systemic Antibiotics Treatment Options for Dairy Cattle

Systemic Antibiotics:

1. Naxcel or Excenel – 2 cc/cwt per day for 4 days IM
   Withdrawal: No milk
   Excenel= 2 day slaughter, Naxcel = 0 slaughter
2. Bovimycin – 2 cc/cwt per day for 4 days IM
   Withdrawal: 48 hrs (2 days) milk
   14 day slaughter
3. Polyflex 400 mg/ml – 1.25cc/cwt per day for 3-5 days IM
   Withdrawal: 48 hrs (2 days) milk
   6 days slaughter
4. Oxytetracycline 100 mg/ml – 4.5 cc/cwt IV or IM (Give IV very slowly)
   Withdrawal: 144 hrs (6 days) milk
   35 days slaughter
5. LA 200 – 2.5cc/cwt per day for 4 days IM
   Withdrawal: 96 hrs (4 days) milk
   28 days slaughter
6. Albon boluses– 2 boluses (25 mg/lb) first day PO
   1 bolus (12.5 mg/lb) for 4 more days PO
   Withdrawal: 60 hrs (2.5 days) milk
   7 days slaughter
7. Cow-Calf Sulfa – 50 cc/cwt IV
   Optional Follow-up: 1 bolus of Albon (12.5 mg/lb) for 4 days PO
   Withdrawal: 60 hrs (2.5 days) milk
   7 days slaughter

NSAIDs:

1. Banamine – 1 cc/cwt IM (up to three days)
   Withdrawal: 72 hour (3 day) milk
   4 day slaughter
2. Aspirin – 2-4 boluses once a day for two days PO
   Withdrawal: 1 day milk
   1 day slaughter

Uterine Infusion:

1. #2: Tetracycline Base
   Withdrawal: 96 hour (4 day) milk
   19 day slaughter
2. #3: Chlorhexidine Base
   Withdrawal: No milk
   No slaughter

Fluid Therapy:

1. Oral: 5 gallons with Freshstart supplement

Other Meds:

1. Dextrose: 500 ml IV
   Withdrawal: No meat/No milk
2. Propylene Glycol: 8 oz = 1 cup = 250 ml twice a day for three days PO
   Withdrawal: No meat/No milk
3. Calcium gluconate (Cal-Dextro): 500 or 1000ml IV (Give slowly)
   Withdrawal: No meat/No milk
4. Predef: 1 cc/cwt once IM
   Withdrawal: No meat/No milk
5. Dexamethasone: 1 cc/cwt IM
   Withdrawal: No meat/No milk
6. Oxytocin: 2 cc IM
   Withdrawal: No meat/No milk
7. ECP: 2 cc once IM
   Withdrawal: No meat/No milk
